Amcal pharmacies around the country are offering free zinc screens in-store from 11-30 April.

Zinc has many benefits and can help to keep you in the best health in a variety of ways zinc is vital for a strong immune system, fertility, healthy skin, hair and nails and in men, a healthy prostate. Zinc plays a vital role in the regeneration of tissues through new cell production.

How can you tell if you are zinc deficient? You may display symptoms such as frequent infections, poor wound healing, ridges or white spots on your fingernails, premature greying or hair loss and most commonly, a decreased sense of smell and taste.

Amcal can screen you for zinc deficiency with a five minute, simple ‘taste test’. Unfortunately serum, urinary, salivary and hair do not adequately detect whenever you are lacking in zinc but a ‘taste test’ has been developed based on the theory that zinc deficiency leads to our taste buds not working properly.

We give you a 5ml sample of zinc 0.1% solution to swallow and depending on the taste sensation and the length of time it takes for a taste response to develop- we can determine whether you may be zinc deficient.
