Sometimes called "Nits," "Kutu bugs," "Utu," or "Head louse."

Anyone can catch head lice - it is not a sign of poor personal hygiene. In fact, lice prefer clean, non-greasy scalps. Head lice can be spread wherever groups of people work, play or live together. Head lice usually occur amongst school children before spreading to adults in their families. Although there is no sure way to prevent the problem, it can be treated effectively and safely if it does occur.

What are Head Lice?

Head lice are small, flat insects about 2-3mm long that breed all year round. They live on the human scalp, feeding on blood about 5-6 times per day.

Head lice cannot jump, fly or swim. They swing quickly from hair to hair holding on tightly with their claws. They travel from person to person when two heads come close together and by sharing combs and hairbrushes. They can survive underwater so will not leave the head during swimming or bathing. Any lice found off the head are usually sick, old or injured, and do not lay eggs.

Female lice lay their eggs close to the scalp. The egg, or nit, is glued firmly to each hair. They hatch in about 7-10 days and a louse may live for up to 30 or 40 days.

Signs of Head Lice

Itchiness or Scratching:Especially toward the back of the scalp and neck, and behind the ears. Scratch marks or a rash can be a sign that your child has head lice. However, not all children complain of itchiness.

White specks (nits or eggs): Stuck firmly to the base of hair very close to the scalp. Eggs hatch in 7-10 days. Eggs found more than 1cm from the scalp are empty egg cases and are dead.

Lice on the scalp: These are tiny and can be dark or light depending on your child's hair colour.

Head lice can live anywhere on the hair and go to the scalp to feed. Adult lice can be found by combing wet hair over a sheet of white paper using a fine-tooth lice comb. Another effective way is to use a fine-tooth comb and comb conditioner through dry detangled hair. Then wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue. The conditioner stuns the lice for about 20 minutes. Look on the tissue for lice or eggs.
