Stokes Valley RSA to Sell Land
The Stokes Valley RSA held a special meeting on
Sunday 20th June to discuss the sale of a sizeable portion of land they own behind the
club rooms.
The land, which is currently occupied by seven bedsit units and two one bedroom flats is
leased to the Lower Hutt City Council (LHCC). The LHCC leased the land in 1978 for a 30
year term with an automatic right of renewal for another 30 years, taking the lease
through to 2038. Ironically, the Council leases the land for 10 cents per year, while the
RSA rays rates of $2000 per year.
Everyone who spoke at the meeting was against the proposed sale. However. the vote was
overwhelmingly in favour of the sale.
While still subject to Council approval, the sale is expected to raise $60,000 which will
be used to upgrade and modernise the club's facilities. Stokeswood Nursing Home are the
intended purchaser, and will keep existing tenants.
