Stokes Valley Library
July 2002

Winter has really settled in now, so it’s a really good time to get a good book and snuggle up by the fire. Here are some new titles for adults that you might like to try:

Lyn Andrews The house on Lonely Street
Renee The Skeleton Woman NZ author - story set in the Hutt Valley
Daneille Steel Lone Eagle
Andrew Taylor Requiem for an Angel
Rhys Bowen Evans to Betsy - a detective story

We have 60 pre-loved detective books that are new to Stokes Valley Library (sent to us from another library). If you love a good mystery, come on down and have a look at the refreshed collection. Our fiction buyer has also produced a pamphlet with mystery authors listed that will assist you in selecting from these books.

A couple of non-fiction books worth mentioning are “Mosaics - Design Sourcebook” - we have had people asking for this subject in the past and not had anything much to offer. This book is chock full of designs that could be used for a variety of projects. If you’re interested in New Zealand history, “Days of darkness - the Government and Parihaka Taranaki 1878 - 1884 Revised edition” by Hazel Riseborough is now available at Stokes Valley.

Another new feature of the library is our DVD collection - very small at present so we can judge how popular it will be. Here are the titles we have so far:

Centre Stage
The Beach
Chocolat
Gladiator
Blue Sky
Star Wars episode 1
Ben-Hur
The Secret Garden.

These DVDs are issued for 1 week and cost $5 to rent. They attract overdue charges of $1 per day.

School holidays are upon us again and we are having a Pacific theme these holidays with guest performers Jerome Leota and Epi Swan at the library both Thursdays of the holidays at 2pm. We will have colouring in pictures and crafts available to amuse the children during the holidays and pre-school story time will run at its usual time of 2pm Wednesdays. Plenty to occupy bored children on wet days!!

Kids - come in and select from our new books to read in the holidays. We have new titles by Paul Stafford - Totally Toasted, Heinous Humbuggery, and Hoopy Hoaxes. Breaking the Rules is a new horse story by Samantha Alexander. The fourth Captain Underpants book by Dav Pilkey has now arrived. Paul Jennings new book Tongue-tied! is also here. Two oldies that we have been asked for recently are now available - The Magic Faraway Tree and The Folk of the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.

See you in the library this winter
