The LIONS Invade Taupo
Just when you thought Taupo was safe, members of Lions
nationwide converged on Taupo for their annual convention. This year 8 members of the
Lower Hutt Host club, and their partners, decided to join the convention and have a fun
weekend away.
For several of these Lions, this was their first convention, and they were
amazed to see the huge numbers that turned out. The national convention draws members of
Lions clubs from the top of the North to the bottom of the South, as well as fellow Lions
from other countries, and every year it is held in a different location to enable all
Lions the opportunity of attending.
The Convention, involves a flag ceremony, a business session, a guest speaker, a function
and a church service over a full weekend. While the Lions are busy with the business
session, the partners are whisked away to enjoy some of the local tourist spots. The flag
ceremony was a moving experience and it was wonderful to see some of our Australian Lions
and American Lions join us for the occasion.
The business session, like most Conventions, was kinda long, but very interesting as it
set out some ideas for the future of Lions. Lions worldwide are looking for new and
unconventional ways to attract some younger people to join them in this fast paced society
which leaves little time for people to get involved with community groups. Certainly, we
all left the convention with a feeling of hope and with a positive approach to building
Lions in our community.
The Lower Hutt Host members decided to spend the Friday evening travelling to Taupo in a
van that belonged to one of their members. They joined in the flag ceremony and business
session on the Saturday, and then they proceeded to enjoy some of what Taupo has to offer.
As a group they were taken down the Waikato River to the bottom of the Huka Falls on a
Paddle Steamer viewing glow worms and enjoying the serenity and beauty of the clear
evening, along with the warm glow from the mulled wine...
Orakei Koraka, north of Taupo, was a place of interest for the Sunday morning
before returning to Wellington. This place has geysers and hot mud pools along with
beautiful views and scenery, set in a tranquil valley.
On the way home, a detour was taken to the chairlift to the top of Mt Ruapehu. It was a
beautiful day and the view was amazing. They all arrived home tired but rejuvenated on the
Sunday night, after their weekend of fun, friendship and a taste of Lionism in their
hearts.
Do you feel you might like to be a part of our group? If so, come to one of our meetings
and meet us. We don't bite, although some of us probably do "roar" a little...
If you would like to join us, we meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6pm at
the Avalon Pavilion. Give Julie-Ann a call on 938-7535 at home and find out more about us,
or let us know which Tuesday you plan to join us.
