We had huge turnouts to our pirate story times in the school holidays. Thank you all for coming and a special thanks to those who got into the spirit of things and dressed up as pirates.

The winners of the New Zealand Post Book awards were "The plight of the penguin" - best non-fiction and overall winner; "Owl" - best senior fiction; "Recycled" - best junior fiction; "Brodie" - best junior book and "Grandpa's shorts" - children's choice. We have copies of all these titles at Stokes Valley Library.

Pirate Story Time!

The Stokes Valley reading club is now well under way, having held their second meeting on 15 April. If you're interested in lively discussions about books and authors, this group is a must for you. Come along to the library at 7pm on the third Monday of the month. The next meeting will be on 20 May. We have all been reading books by Minette Walters and all agree that, although there were minor aspects of her writing style that did irritate some of us, she writes a very readable psychological thriller and even members who normally don't read this genre will read more titles by her. Other worthwhile authors and titles mentioned were "The vintner's luck" by Elizabeth Knox; "Labels" by Louis De Bernieres; "Sit" by Joe Bennett and any other books by him.

In the children's library, we have been getting a lot of new videos, cassettes and CDs. So if you have children who are into these, come on in and have a look at our collection. The cassettes with books are very popular with children as they can read along.

Pre-school story times are held on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm during term time and we read stories, do action rhymes and make a craft all on a different theme each week. These sessions are best suited to 3 and 4 year olds.

See you all soon at your library,
