For the past 10 years I have been actively involved with Local Government. As a Naenae resident 10 years ago, I went along to a public meeting where the Naenae Community Committee was elected by the people present. This committee was a project of Mayor Glen Evans. I feel we were able to achieve some positive things for Naenae and the Eastern Ward Committee have continued on with the process.

The major achievement was getting the Learners Pool at Naenae roofed and rebuilt, through fundraising and lobbying the Annual Plan process. Seven years on I became a member of the Northern Ward Committee appointed after a mock election was held. This triennium Council themselves have appointed the four Ward Committees and I am the alternate City Councillor.

My goal for the next three years is to work alongside the residents of the Northern Ward, Taita, Pomare and Stokes Valley, being a reference point and a sounding board for enquiries. The following list describes part of my local Ward workload for the next three years:
  • Community boards across the city,
  • Establish a new entrance to the historic walkway in Horeaka St,
  • Help the Pomare Community House in its restructuring,
  • Work alongside the Taita Trust to gain the lease for the Taita Community Hall,
  • Lobby to have the Taita Shopping Centre upgraded, including more carparking,
  • Lobby for a new passage for buses in and out of Taita Shopping Centre,
  • Consult on the beautification of the Stokes Valley entranceway,
  • Work with the Walter Nash Stadium Trustees,
  • Work with the group involved in the Taita/Pomare Needs Analysis,
  • Liase with HNZ for improvements,
  • Be active with the Stokes Valley Community Centre,
  • Tidy up the Pomare Station rail corridor stage 2,
  • George St / Delaney Drive road calming,
  • New bridge across the Hutt River,
  • Local skatepark,
  • BBQ's for Speldhurst Park,
  • Speldhurst Park rejuvenation,
  • Work closely with the Northern Ward Committee.

These are just a few projects that are already in the pipeline and I know others will surface. Alongside all this will be business as usual around the Council table as your local representative.

Accountable, accessible and honest.
